Senior Club Coach Jon James was 3rd overall at the Castle Combe racing circuit 10k, whilst Zoe Kurle continues her improvement when lowering her personal best to win outright amongst the women. Meanwhile u17 Harry Barton continues to post some good marks on the indoor circuit whilst senior athlete Emily Smith (u23) has posted an excellent indoor mile time. The 179th edition of the Street 5k race, along with junior 1k and 2k races, saw Simon Gilbert (Devizes Running Club) pace his 5k race to perfection to gain the win. Helen Southcott (Maiden Newton/Wells Harriers) won for the women for the 3rd time this Series. Meanwhile at the weekend Rob Moore gained his first V60 prize when winning the age category at the tough Humdinger Half marathon; and on the Saturday Elise Thorner was one of 5 great performances by junior Harriers at the Pontypool fixture of the Gwent Cross Country League. Wells City Harriers saw three of its members compete at the tough South of England Cross Country Championships last Saturday. The event, held at Parliament Hill fields, London, by Hampstead Heath draws athletes from as far as Cornwall to Norfolk to contest challenging courses. The men’s race, over 15km is reckoned to be the longest Championship event distance in the UK.

Helen Southcott ran in the women’s 8km race for the first time, amongst over 700 women, and managed a very credit worthy 167th placing in a time of 34.41.Helen joined the Harriers last year to specifically improve her cross-country and road running times.
Zak Hurrell also competed for the first time at these Championships, and with over 1150 men taking part he achieved 210th placing in a time of 54.28. A slightly more experienced, though younger, Harrier Hon Life Member, Luke Prior, also raced. Luke, previously selected for TeamGB when a Harrier but now competing for the Aldershot Club had an excellent run for his 12th place finish in 47.12. This was Luke's first time in the senior mens race after previous outings in the junior and u20 ranks

Over 20 of the Wells City Harrier junior members contested the annual Somerset Schools Cross Country Championships last Saturday 19th January. Daisy Pellow, Holly Bigger and Elise Thorner for the girls, and Bradley Glover for the boys, had a very good reason to smile as they won their respective races. A number of junior Harriers were competing for the first time at these School Championships and many of the Harrier trained runners have now been selected to compete for Somerset Schools AA at the forthcoming South West Schools Championships - well done all! Entry forms for the Babcary road race are now available and will soon be available for the Butleigh multi-terrain race; whilst on-line entry for the various races at the Wells Fun Run in May are also up and running.

There was another great night of racing at the 178th edition of the Street 5k races. Harrier Life Member (TeamGB international) Ben Tickner returned after a long gap to win the race, whilst Zoe Kurle won for the first time at Street. Meanwhile last Sunday saw Ollie Thorner finish 4th u20 at the UK indoor multi-event Championships in Sheffield; and also the same day was the latest edition of the South West Cross Country Championships when over 20 Harriers took on the challenge of Aldon Hill for Club and in some cases County!
