Gwent League Race 1 - Pembrey

On Saturday 14th October 2023 the Gwent League 2023/24 got underway at Pembrey, hosted by Carmarthen Harriers, with Cardiff being the second fixture in November. On a slightly altered course to previous years, with some extra twist and turns through the wooded area, the route included a number of short sharp hills and not forgetting the infamous sand dune.

Plenty of Harriers made the long trip near the South West tip of Wales. Some of the stand out performances came from Oskar Beck who won his race, Daisy Davies who came 3rd, Tom Webb who came 2nd after moving up a race age bracket from last season, and Christian Green, Adam Gibson and Tim Hindle who all finished in the top 10%. These all receive a Gwent T-Shirt at the next fixture.

U13 Boys Race Report

(Words from Matt Beck)

After the torrential rain on Friday night the weather improved and was sunny and not too cold! Oskar was on good form as we stayed nearby the night before the race and after a walk around of the course he was feeling confident. After starting fast, Oskar took the lead after the first long straight and safely navigated a tight incline on a sand dune, which became a bottleneck for those behind, and after only half of the first lap he was one of three strong runners in a lead group. Oskar managed to stay in the lead for the second lap and had a great sprint finish winning by only a second! It was nice to see camaraderie at the end with the three in the lead group shaking hands and then Oskar had his first ever interview by the race mc! (He did mention Paul and Graham when asked who his coaches are!)

Oskar is looking forward to the remaining four races in the league and would like to improve on his second place overall in the Wessex league last year and it should be an exciting battle between the lead three runners!

Abingdon Marathon

There was some impressive running by the Harriers at this year’s Abingdon Marathon on Sunday 22nd October. The conditions were good to help them all to a PB. Christian Green had a strong performance finishing 7th. Congratulations to Zak Hurrell for completing his first marathon. London awaits! Adam Sutton knocked nearly 10 minutes off his PB and Jeremy Linter finished in sub 3 hours for the first time after his 6th attempt in doing so. Well done to them all!
