Jon James takes top billing this week for his British Masters Championship winning run over 5km. Jon was well clear of his main rivals in the V55 age group at the finish and worked hard throughout the race to win Championship Gold. He then followed that up with the top age group placing at last weekend’s Gwent XC League – that’s some consistency! Over 50 Harriers have booked for the Club's Annual Dinner. Read on for reports from Gwent & Wessex Leagues, and from a lovely little fell race on Dartmoor. Please note that entries are now open for the County & SW XC Championships….

Gwent XC League fixture 2

Jon James reports:

“The second round of the Gwent cross-country league was held on a beautiful autumnal day last Sunday (14th November) at Parc de Pugh in Brecon (the home of the local rugby club). A race in Brecon would conjure up a picture of hills, but the race was as flat as they come, staying down near the river, which at least meant there was a bit of mud! Only 3 senior men had run in the first fixture in Cardiff, so having 6 for this fixture was a luxury for team manager Simon Prior. It’s 5 to score and our cumulative score of 1768 points meant that we easily won division 3 and in fact were 5th team overall.

There were some great individual performances, none more so than that of Dan Maydew; he’s a junior and could have run in the U20 race, but decided to give the longer senior race a go – he finished a superb 13th out of 394 finishers with a time of 35.25 for the 10.2K course, He was closely followed by Chris Green in 28th (36.08), his first race since his London marathon exploits, and then Jon James, 34th in 36.33 (first in the V45 and V55 age groups).

Matt Lusby made a quick start, and although fading slightly, rallied to finish in 48th (37.23), and Alex Coombs was the important fifth scorer in 89th (38.42) – impressive for someone who had run in the Street 5K a few days earlier and played 90 minutes of football the day before! Andrew Deamer suffered with hamstring trouble, but kept going and still finished in the top half with 192nd place “.

Also competing at this tough Gwent League event were some of the Juniors who train on a Tuesday. Leyton Finn was 25th in the u13 race in 9.30; and then a squad of u17s packed well for 7th,. 10th, 18th & 26th: Jack Harvey 20.36; Harrison Williams 20.49; Bradley Glover 22.06; and Oliver Castle 23.33 respectively.

The next Gwent fixture is on Saturday 4th December at Pembrey Country Park, near Llanelli.

Wessex XC League fixture 2

Another squad of Harriers competed the previous weekend (Sunday 7th November) at the Wessex League fixture held at Ferndown in Dorset,

In the u11 girls race Ellie Birchall was 1st with team-mates Bibi Abernathy 2nd and Amelia Ashman 16th.

Daisy Abernathy was 3rd in the u13 girls race with Lexi-Mae Faulkner 23rd . For the u13 boys, Will Birchall won by a canter, with Arthur Fisher 4th and Vince Seagrove 21st.

In the u15 boys race, Finlay Downes went one better than the first fixture when he won, with Henry Birchall 3rd, and Jay Carey 16th. For the u15 girls Daisy Davies won with Jemima Seagrove 10th.

Ollie Bishop was 9th in the u17 men’s race whilst Will Armstrong was 4th for the u20 men (8th in the seniors race), with Geoff Cole the only other Harrier to compete in the senior men’s race in 26th place.

Well done to all. The final fixture in the Wessex XC League will be combined within the SW XC Championships fixture to be held on 2nd January – separate entry required – see below.

British Masters 5k Championships 7th November

Jon James won the BMAF National 5K road championships in the M55 age group - held in Barrowford, Lancashire. Jon comments “ Not a particularly quick time, 16.22, but won by 20 seconds, and conditions were not at all good - strong winds“
