Wells City Harriers

aaaDan at Midlands re sized

(Above- Dan Maydew wearing his Midlands Counties vest running a great pb)

As we see the start of the Harrier’s participation as part of the Yeovil Olympiad’s teams in the British National League (u17s upwards) – commenced last Saturday - and with the South West League (u13s upwards) due to start next month, Harriers are gearing up for the County Championships this coming weekend (14th & 15th May).

Meanwhile some have been in action recently when selected to represent the Midland Counties at a competitive 5km road race in Cardiff. Well done to u17 Sophie Nicholls and u20 Dan Maydew on their runs where they achieved personal bests. Read on for a report. Dan followed it up with another storming run over 1500m at the British League Track & Field match this past Saturday.

Harriers looking to compete for our joint team with Yeovil, especially in the SW League, should make sure that the YOAC team managers are aware of your availability for the League fixtures and of any performances you achieve this track season so that they can select the strongest squad. Follow this link for information on details of managers.

Good luck to those competing in the County Championships this coming Saturday & Sunday 14th & 15th May. Please send any good photos and a report (preferably of as many Harriers as you spot!) to Paul by 8pm Monday.

Read on also for some of the paperwork for the Annual General Meeting to be held this Wednesday 11th May commencing at 8pm at Tramways. There will also be some Annual awards & the ballot for the Club’s London Marathon places after the close of the formal business.

Cardiff Race for Victory Road 5k – 1st May

Report from Simon Prior:

“Congratulations to Sophie Nicholls and Dan Maydew for their selection for the Midland Counties team for the Inter-area 5k Road Race held at Cardiff on Sunday 1st May.

Sophie and Dan competed for the Midlands against England, Wales, a Northern team and an Army team as well as 1800 runners.

In an elite field Dan came 11th and 5th u20 in a new pb of 14.36 of a pb of 15.18 set at the fast 5k week previously. Dan was 2nd home for the Midlands and even beat two of the England u20 team. Dan moved into the top 15 in the UK for u20s in the 2022 rankings.

Sophie running as a u20 but is still only a u17 - a great achievement to be selected - and setting a new pb of 16.47 and was 10th in the senior woman’s race and 6th u20 moving Sophie into top 3 in UK for a u17 in 2022 so far.”

Dan has subsequently also run a new 1500m pb when competing for the joint Yeovil & Wells team at the first of the National Athletics League fixtures this past weekend at Milton Keynes (7th May) in 3.57. This time is good enough for the English Schools qualifying standard.
