Wells City Harriers

The Swan Hotel was the venue - An excellent 2 course meal was served to the 80 hungry runners, and partners, and after a raffle, and the draw for the London Marathon places, the trusted ‘clapometer’ test was used to make sure that Duncan Verel thoroughly deserved his ‘bog-seat’. Later, Richard Morgan’s quiz had a few Harriers almost standing on their heads to make sense of some upside down tests of knowledge!

Club Chairman Graham Goldsmid welcomed the 80 or so Harriers and friends to the Club’s Annual Dinner at the Swan Hotel in Wells last Friday (24th November) and reminded all that we were returning to our roots with a Dinner held in the City. He reminded all that the Club started back in 1981 with runners gathering around the Fountain in Wells Market Place for the weekly Wednesday night training run, prompted by runners in training for various races including the (then) new London Marathon – how appropriate that we were allocating the Club’s reserved marathon places for 2018 at the Dinner?

There were 11 members in the ballot and only 2 places available. (We have 144 members aged 18 and over but London Marathon organisers have moved the ‘goal-posts’ this year by increasing the threshold to 150 for us to gain another place. - If you run with the Harriers but haven’t renewed your membership please do so next year!). Duncan Verel and Robert Moore were the lucky recipients of the 2 allocated places, and Graham acknowledged the presence of our training and competition partners from Yeovil Olympiads who had again enabled their London Marathon place to be used in the ballot. For Duncan it was the first of two awards as he was also easily the best candidate for the fabled ‘bog-seat’ for doing the most outrageous or silly thing this year. We will leave Duncan to 'wax lyrical' about just a few of his antics when out training or racing.
