LONDON MARATHON – Ballot for the Club allocated place(s)

The Club receives guaranteed entry for the Marathon dependent on the number of senior members who are EA registered. We are hopeful that our partners, Yeovil Olympiads will also have a place and so there will be 2 places available for the Club ballot to be drawn at the Annual Dinner.

Rules to be included in the Club ballt:

  1. Have to be a paid up member when entering the main London ballot (ie paid up by the end of April for the 2019/20 membership year) & entered as a Harrier
  2. Have been rejected in the main ballot and provided evidence of rejection;
  3. Have not received the Clubs place in either of the 2 previous years

We have had 6 names of members that satisfy the criteria so far for this year

Emma Jupp

Rosie Park

Jo Swift

Melissa Aspinall

Kim Parish

Richard Morgan

Please let Graham and/or Paul know if you are also eligible and your name is not on the list.

HALF-PRICE CLUB MEMBERSHIP now available – from Oct 1st to March 31st 2020

Please contact the Membership Secretary, Alice Knight, and complete a form if you are a new prospective member. In addition to your Club fee we would encourage all over age 10 to pay the England Athetics Regsitarion fee for the benefits that provides (discounted race entry; eligibility for Championships; incentives through the EA registration scheme; etc). All members also get reduced price training (£2 per week rather than £3 per week) & discounted rate for Club socials & team kit.

Some past results you may have missed whilst I was away (*)

(*Paul has been Web editor for 10 years or so, but when Paul is not in country there is sometimes a gap. Can you help by taking on this role from time to time? Paul aims to compile a weekly web report which is also sent to the local newspaper by 8am Tuesday. For it to be accurate and up to date he needs athletes and parents of athletes to send him reports and good photos – send by 8pm Monday to be included in that week’s web article/newspaper article. We need the report to include all Harriers taking part not just the winners name!! Paul is at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Sept 14th/15th South of England Fell Running Championships

Paul Chadwick was the only Wells City Harrier taking part in this year's Southern Fell Running Championships held on the Isle of Wight. Once again consisting of three tough races over the weekend, there were 218 competitors drawn from across the region taking on the challenge. Paul first contested the Championships in 1995, and was again in charge of presenting the medals to the winning individuals and teams, on behalf of the SEAA.

Despite a sore hamstring, Paul managed to finish all three races - Saturday morning's 3.8km race with 235m ascent; Saturday afternoon's 12km race with 443m ascent; and Sunday's 21km race with 487m ascent and finished just outside the V60 medals, based on finishing positions in the 3 races taken together. The weather was again very kind with the heat, especially for the Saturday race, a bit too hot for some.....

Paul presented the Gold, Silver & Bronze medals to the first 3 in the Southern Fell Championships with Chris Lewis from host club Ryde Harriers on the right. (photo by Helen)

Sept 15th Uphill to Wells Relay team

Report by Oli Frost

“We entered a team into the open class of the Uphill to Wells relay, a 29 mile race set over 5 legs following the West Mendip way from the beach at Uphill to the cathedral green at Wells. Club members Andrew Deamer, Oliver Frost, Chris Walker, Peter Clothier and Craig Foley ran a leg each in hot conditions completing the race in 4hrs and 4minutes taking 3rd place.”

The next opportunities to join a Harrier team in an off-road relay are likely to be the 100km Wessex Ridgeway Relay in mid-May (team manager Peter Clothier) and the 103 mile Cotswold Way Relay at the end of June (team manager Paul Chadwick). Contact Peter or Paul if you want more information and to add your name to one of the teams. The Club pays the team entry fee and the usual policy is to have one fast team and one not so fast, but to have a sociable day out in great countryside.
