The 182nd edition of the Street 5k race on Wednesday 13th November saw Wells Harriers Ben Tickner and Daisy Davies win on a night when the rain abated in time for the race but left an added obstacle in the form of the large flooded stretch across the route towards the bottom of Farm Road. Well done to all that raced on the night, especially the intrepid group from Avon Valley Runners, and to the hard working volunteer marshals and officials who helped make sure the event went off without any mishap. Read on for the full report and link to results and to hear of the bonus on offer to all at the next (183rd) edition on Wednesday 11th December.

Ben Tickner has recently moved back to live in Wells after being away for a while and his time when winning of 16.02 was quite a few seconds ahead of team mate Zak Hurrell in 16.42, with 3rd place going to Vilem Horak of Millfield School om 17.02. For the women, the Harrier’s Daisy Davies was missed off the original displayed results but she powered round in 19.02 to win on the night with team-mate Helen Allen in 2nd (1st F35) and Holly Newman (Avon Valley Runners) 3rd in 20.02. For Holly that was an excellent personal best but not quite below sub-20 (come back next month to dip under the mark!).

Other age-group winners were: 1st junior Vojta Horak (Millfield School) in 17.22; 1st V40 Tom Dukes (Wells City Harriers) in 17.42; 1st V50 Andrew Tindal (Wells City Harriers) in 19.21; 1st V60 was Kevin Stenner (Yeovil Town RR) in 20.47; and 1st V70 was evergreen Len Horlock (South West Vets) in 26.26. For the ladies 1st F45 was Gill Pearson (Running For Time) in 20.05; 1st F55 was Diane Hier (Avon Valley Runners) in 21.41 ; and 1st F65 was Lesley Nesbitt (Yeovil Town RR) in 26.27.

Interestingly, the top age graded results on the night were by Diane Hier with a whopping 84.6% for the women and by former TeamGB runner Ben Tickner, a mere 82%, for the men!

Well done to all that ran quicker than last month and thus claimed their bonus bottle of Bulbeggar Cider or Lamyatt Apple Juice – to order more bottles from the village co-operative place your orders direct with them! (or with Paul – 4 bottles for £10 with all proceeds going as usual to the Lamyatt village hall/church fund). Next month we have the same incentive – run quicker than the October or November 5k editions and claim your bonus. Please only claim a bottle if you have beaten your previous time!

November 2019 5k Results here

The 1k and 2k races for juniors were once again keenly contested by enthusiastic youngsters. Elsa Evans won in the 1k race in 4.25, just ahead of Eva Dowden, 4.26. The 2k race was won by Caleb Gifford Groves in 8.15 with Leyton Finn 2nd in 8.29. We’d like to encourage the juniors to continue to train hard and try and get as close as possible to the 1k and 2k records. Remember the 1k race is for school years 5 & 6 (or younger with parent) and the 2k race for school years 7 & 8.

At the December edition of the race, not only can you gain a bonus bottle of Cider/Apple juice if you run quicker in the 5k but all that compete over the 1k, 2k or 5k distance will gain a small bag of Fudge made by our friends in Martock at Radford’s Fine Fudge. (an energy boost post-race!)
