The 183rd edition of the Street 5k race on Wednesday 11December saw Chard RR Wayne Loveridge and Wells City Harrier Helen Allen win on a night which was mercifully dry but just a tad chilly. Well done to all 76 runners that raced on the night and to the hard-working volunteer marshals and officials who helped make sure the event went off successfully. Read on for report and 5k results. The next (184th) edition is on Wednesday 8 January 2020.

For the women, the Harrier’s Helen Allen finished in 19:09 to win on the night with team-mate Daisy Pellow in 2nd (1st U20F) and Gill Pearson (Running For Time) 3rd in 19:53.
Other age-group winners were: 1st Junior Toby Firkins (Avon Valley Runners) in 18:47; 1st V50 Andrew Piper (Wells City Harriers) in 19:44; 1st V60 was Martin Lascelles (Maiden Newton Runners) in 19:30; and 1st V70 was evergreen Len Horlock (South West Vets) in 2:.20. For the ladies 1st FS was Kiersty Rose (Calne RC) in 20:29; 1st F35 was Vicky Scrowston (Running For Time) in 21:59 ; and special mention must go to 1st F55 Diane Hier (Avon Valley Runners) who set a new F55 course record in November with a time of 21:36 only to smash that record again this time with a brilliant 21:25. Well done Diane!
Well done also to the Harrier juniors who train with us on a Monday night and broke their own 5k race pbs: Logan Moncrieff & Harrison Williams; or their own 2k pb, Leyton Finn.
STREET 5k RACE RESULTS DECEMBER 2019
STREET 5k RACE COURSE RECORDS (as at December 2019)
Interestingly, looking at the top ten age graded results on the night, the ladies outnumbered the men 6 to 4. Diane Hier led the field with a massive 85.7%, Martin Lascelles recorded 83.3%. and Gill Pearson also gave it her all with 80%
Everyone who competed this month (5k & junior races) received a special package of Radfords Fine Fudge. You can order more supplies direct from the company. Many thanks to Colin Tyler.
Well done to all first timers and those that ran quicker than last month and thus claimed their bonus bottle of Bulbeggar Cider or Lamyatt Apple Juice – to order more bottles from the village co-operative place your orders direct with them! (or with Paul – 4 bottles for £10 with all proceeds going as usual to the Lamyatt village hall/church fund). Next month we have the same incentive – run a 2019/2020 Series pb and claim your bonus. Please only claim a bottle if you have beaten your previous time!
The 1k race for juniors were once again keenly contested by 8 enthusiastic youngsters. Elsa Evans won in 4:31, with Josh Hawkins coming second in 5:03. The 2k race saw Leyton Finn beat his November time by just over 10 seconds to finish in 8.18. We’d like to encourage the juniors to continue to train hard and try and get as close as possible to the 1k and 2k records. Remember the 1k race is for school years 5 & 6 (or younger with parent) and the 2k race for school years 7 & 8.
