Matt Lusby from local Club Street Striders ran away to victory in16.33 on Wednesday night (8th January) whilst Helen Allen (Wells City Harriers) was on good form too to win for the women in 19.29. There was a good turn out for what was edition number 184 in the 31 year sequence of Street 5k races, with a good contingent coming over from Cheddar Running Club, and some old stalwarts from Yeovil Town Road Runners making a welcome return or debut. All that made their debut, or achieved a pb this season, should have received their bottle of Bullbeggar Cider or Lamyatt Apple Juice after the race (claim it next time if you had to leave early). In the junior races Caleb Gifford-Groves had an excellent 3.37 winning time with Elsa Evans, 4.35, first for the girls, whilst Freddie Punchard had a good solid run for the 2k winning in 9.12. Juniors – please try and beat the course records at the juniors races!! Read on for more reporting and the full results!
Juniors on the start line at the December 2019 edition
We always wonder after the Christmas celebrations and the New Year return to work/college/school whether there will be a reasonable turn out at the January Street 5k, so we were really pleased that 74 runners took part and finished in the 5k and 12 took part in the junior races. Well done if you toed the start line or indeed were one of the volunteer helpers who marshalled, recorded finish times or helped out elsewhere!
In the 5k race, behind Matt Lusby in 2nd place was Christian Brown in 17.24 with 1st V40, 3rd overall, being the Harriers Chris Walker with another consistent bit of running for 17.30. 1st V50 was Gerry King (Weston AC) in 19.52. 1st V60 was Adrian Cornford (Chard RC) in 19.55 and 1st V70 was Malcolm Maxted (Yeovil Town RR) who I believe was making his debut at Street. Well done Malcolm, enjoy that wine!
For the women, behind Helen Allen’s nippy time was 2nd placed Kiersty Rose of Calne AC in 20.01 (come back next month to go sub-20!) and 3rd was also 1st F45, Gill Pearson (Running for Time) in 20.05. 1st F55 was Charlie Spencer (Maiden Newton) in 25.55.
On the Age graded analysis Lee McMeeken of Medway AC, who finished in overall 4th was the only competitor to go over 80% with his 80.2 whilst Gill Pearson was closest for the women with her 79.2%.
So, we go again with edition number 185 on February 12th – Cider or Juice to any that break their 5k time for this season, or for any that make their debut here at Street. See you then.
